Preparation Steps
Step 1/11
Place the softened unsalted butter and icing sugar in a mixing bowl, then whisk until smooth and creamy.
Step 2/11
Fold the all-purpose flour into the butter mixture until a crumbly dough forms.
Step 3/11
Add milk gradually, using up to 1.5 tbsp (22 ml), and mix only until the dough comes together.
Step 4/11
Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it to about 5 mm (1/4 inch) thick.
Step 5/11
Refrigerate the rolled dough for 60 min, until firm enough to cut cleanly.
Step 6/11
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Step 7/11
Cut the chilled dough into rounds, then cut a star-shaped opening from the center of every round.
Step 8/11
Transfer the candy to a zip-top bag and crush it into small pieces with a meat mallet.
Step 9/11
Fill each star-shaped opening with crushed clear fruit hard candy, keeping the candy inside the dough border.
Step 10/11
Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 min, until the shortbread edges are lightly golden and the candy has melted.
Step 11/11
Cool the cookies on the baking tray until the candy centres set, then transfer them to a wire rack.
