Preparation Steps
Step 1/15
Preheat the oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Lightly oil the 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
Step 2/15
Finely chop the yellow onion and mince the garlic.
Step 3/15
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti pasta 2 minutes less than the package directions.
Step 4/15
Drain the pasta in a colander. Reserve it while making the vodka sauce.
Step 5/15
Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the chopped onion until soft, about 5 minutes.
Step 6/15
Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 7/15
Pour 1/2 cup vodka into the skillet. Simmer until reduced by about half, about 2 minutes.
Step 8/15
Stir the crushed tomatoes into the skillet. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes.
Step 9/15
Stir 1 cup heavy cream into the tomato sauce. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
Step 10/15
Combine the cooked ziti pasta with about half of the vodka sauce. Fold in the ricotta cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese.
Step 11/15
Spread half of the pasta mixture in the baking dish. Spoon half of the remaining vodka sauce over the pasta.
Step 12/15
Sprinkle 1 cup mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Add the remaining pasta mixture in an even layer.
Step 13/15
Cover the pasta with the remaining vodka sauce. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese.
Step 14/15
Bake uncovered for 30 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Rest the baked ziti for 10 minutes before serving.
Step 15/15
Tear the fresh basil over the baked ziti. Serve warm.
