Preparation Steps
Step 1/9
Warm the whole milk to about 110°F (43°C), then stir in the granulated sugar and active dry yeast. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
Step 2/9
Add 4 cups of the all-purpose flour, salt, and 3 tablespoons of softened unsalted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Step 3/9
Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add the remaining flour gradually only if the dough is excessively sticky.
Step 4/9
Place the dough in a lightly buttered bowl and cover it. Let it proof in a warm place for 60 to 90 minutes until doubled in size.
Step 5/9
Punch down the risen dough and roll it into a rectangle about 9 inches wide. Roll the dough tightly into a log.
Step 6/9
Pinch the seam and ends closed, then place the dough seam-side down in the 9 x 5-inch loaf pan. Cover and proof for 30 to 45 minutes until the dough rises about 1 inch above the pan.
Step 7/9
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the risen dough with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted unsalted butter.
Step 8/9
Bake the loaf for 28 to 32 minutes until puffed and golden brown. The center should register about 190°F (88°C) if checked with a thermometer.
Step 9/9
Remove the bread from the pan and cool it completely on a wire rack. Slice the cooled loaf for sandwiches or toast.
